3D Printing & Crowns

Today I worked on all things 3d printing. My jewelry pieces are going to be 3D printed and displayed in a frame; that I just decided I am going to laser cut myself, I also did designs for my tiara headband that will have 3D printed elements, hopefully, use the CNC and will have LED lights woven through.

I don’t want to show the whole necklace but I’m, working on a nameplate and ring to go with it. I’m having some issues creating the 3D print design for the ring but I am going to YouTube it out. I’m pretty sure I have to create some support for the middle letters.

Also below you will see the sketches for my headband crown. Which one is your fave?

Some of the Fashion in Technology…

This weekend I started the sketches that go with the final exhibit. Most of my projects already have fashion aspects and some of them needed fashion aspects to be added as well as needed to be thought through.

Anyway; there is a project I did in Digital Fabrications of Creative Technology called ‘Ease on Down the Road’; it’s a bit about my life but the reference is the 1978 movie The Wiz. The Wiz had revolutionary costume design and that inspired me. To go with the display of the original project I have designed a mini collection inspired by the movie and its characters. The final fashion Illustrations will go on display with the interactive project. See the 1st part of the project here: https://liasnewmediamusings.wordpress.com/2018/02/07/makey-makey-music/

This is the 1st draft of what will be the illustrations and some reference images from the movie. Next time you see these they will be FULLY illustrated & on display. What do you think?

Next, I worked on the outline design for the dress I will be making as my representation of heat press and digital fabrication. This dress will be the canvas that I place my custom heat press & digital fabrication designs on.  What that main design is I haven’t come up with completely BUT I’m working on it. The final design idea wont be revealed until the gallery show. See these two basic dresses and let me know what you think.

Gallery Layout

Wow!! Already we are in week 4 of the semester; A month flies by so quickly!! Last week I meant to start on the sketches that blend the whole exhibit together but I feel a bit behind. Today I meet with the gallery director Jacklyn at Teachers College and outlined my exhibit. Gallery C in Myers Gallery is more intimate than I anticipated but after going through everything with Jacklyn I am confident that my 8 works will showcase really well in the space. I am glad that I made a plan of the works I want to show in advance because attacking this without a plan would be so much harder.

See below for the sketch an outline of how my works will be displayed. By Sunday I hope to update you all with previews of the sketches I will be showing with the works. Feel free to comment with ideas on layout.

Setting Up The Final

This semester is all about the end and I am constantly in planning mode. Last week you read about me hashing out ideas concerning what my final project would be; in the end after talking with my professor/ advisor Erin we came to the conclusion that a gallery showing some of my works since I have been at TC as well as including new works is best for me at the current graduate level and for my post-graduate career. Since my last post I have done the following:

  • Booked Gallery C (Macy Gallery) at Teachers College, Columbia University
  • Name the Show/ Create a Theme: Fashionable Tech (Yes… Like my final last semester)
  • Outline the Pieces I plan to show
  • Create a timeline so I can be done with works on time for installation

I have also been thinking about how I will display the works. Because there is a lot of tech involved I’m nervous about a few pieces that would require a computer hook up to work. I also have 2- 3 pieces that I want to be interactive for the viewers so I will be contacting the person in charge of the gallery this week so a time can be set to go over how to install and what is best for the space I will be showing my works. Figuring out display will help me in creating works and modifying works if need be.

I don’t yet want to tell you all the install date but see below a chart of all the works I’ve done while at TC plus the two new works I will be creating for the show. The second chart you will see is listing all the works I will be showing including the video of extra not necessarily fashion based works I’ve done while at TC.

Are you all as excited and nervous as I am about all of this??

Welcome to Advanced Studio Independent Study

Hi, Blog world! I’m back and in my final semester at TC; this semester I am attacking a NEW passion project and I’m here to explain to you the ideas that are rolling around in my head. This final Passion project will be my official entry into the Creative Technologist world. I feel like after this I will be a bonafide Creative Technologist. See the below sketch of my mind map showcasing my ideas; following the image are descriptions of the two separate ideas I came up with.

advanced studio mind map

1st Idea- Fashion and Technology Gallery Show

Organize and create works to show at a fashion-themed creative technology gallery show.  I would display my previous creative technology work and create 3-5 new works to show. The invitation would be open to the Entire Department and invited guests. Opening night I would be there and the works would be on display at the end of the semester for approximately three days (enlarge photo for details).

2nd Idea – STEAM based Art and Technology Education Website

This idea is to create an expanded Art and Technology Education website that is a living portfolio. I would adequately document my art, fashion, and technology projects to display on the website. I will also be creating 3-5 new works to add to this site. With these works, I will create lesson plans that show how fashion can be integrated into STEAM programs; and/or how STEAM based programs can be created for schools and after-school programs (enlarge photo for details).

Passion Project Final – Fashionable Tech

Project Title: Fashionable Tech

Summary: This project is ALMOST the perfect combination of my love for fashion and creative technology. I have always wanted to do light up clothing because it reminds me of my LA Gear light up sneakers as a child but better. So instead of getting too complicated and going into eveningwear, I decided to create a coat using LED lights as well as other machinery I really enjoy and am curious about. Like the laser cutter and the vinyl cutter. I am excited about the final product.

Inspiration: This project idea pretty much came from myself, but I do recall seeing LED fashions on YouTube and in articles over the past few years. For me my idea is practical and the next step in fashion. It also shows how technology can be used to help create fashion and not only used in conjunction with fashion.

Research: For this project, the only thing I really needed to research was what type of LED LIGHTS to use. My major is creative technology, so I had experience using the laser cutter for cutting and etching but not on leather only on wood and acrylic. In my original design I also wanted to etch on denim because I saw videos with the laser cutter doing this but ultimately this type of use wasn’t approved by the managers of Thing Space. At 1stI thought, I’d work with the mini LED’s we have in Thingspace but after talking to Erin and doing some internet research I learned about the rope LEDs that come with a battery pack. In the end, I came to the conclusion that these would be the easiest to use in sewing as well as when it comes to powering them because it has a standard battery pack.

Process: I have extensive sewing experience and did all the sewing at home. The process of making the stencils and etching was done in Adobe Illustrator. The details of how things progressed with my project can be seen in my blog postings.

Visual Documentation: See images of my final project below.

Passion Project- We’re almost at the finish line!! Eeekkkk

Our passion project is due on Monday and it is scary! Today I received my LED lights and I’m sooo excited!! Most of the coat is sewn and on Monday I completed the etching on the front panel. I’m super excited to finish the coat up and present on Monday. See some process pics below.

Pic descriptions left to right:

  1. Back view of top and bottom of the coat without sleeves and bottom trim.
  2. Front view of coat top & bottom without front panels; not connected.
  3. Failed attempt of crown stencil for the back of the coat.
  4. Crown stencil successfully applied.
  5. My LED light for the border trim of the coat.

Passion Project Update

As we approach the end of this semester we are coming down to the wire with the finalization of our passion projects and WOAH it is making me nervous. My coat is still in pieces, I haven’t had the time or money to purchase my LED lights (holding out hope for Monday), I have more laser etching to do and I have to print and do the stencil on the back of the coat. Le Sigh.

Attached are photos of the etching I did last week on the pockets and front panel of the coat. Can you read it? if so let me know what it says in the comments.

Passion Project- Progress Week 3

Hey Bloggers,

So we are knee deep in our passion project work or were supposed to be. Anyway, this week I worked on pattern modifications for my coat. I thought ThingSpace was going to be open on Monday but it wasn’t so again; NO artifacts!

Another thing I need to figure out is what type of LED’s I should use and how to map them. Comment if you have any tips on Types of LED’s to use in Fashion.

See below for Pics of my pattern making processes.

My Passion Project

Hello Bloggers!!

I’ve been gone for a few weeks but I’m back and ready to tell you how I plan to end this semester! My passion project was always tied to fashion and I decided that look overpowered function in my ultimate idea so I am making a coat using various technological techniques that I’ve learned in this class and throughout master’s program. Below is a sketch of the coat I will be making. Aside from my fashion design skills, I will be using the following techniques:

  • Laser cutting on leather & denim
  • Heat press/vinyl cutter
  • LED light show in various colors

Passion Project Sketch

Steps:

  1. I already made a coat pattern similar to this so I just need to modify it to make it like this picture which won’t take much work.
  2. I will cut the denim and leather pieces out. I will use Illustrator to create a laser cut and or etching design; maybe using a mix of words and images.
  3. Etch/laser cut the proper pattern pieces
  4. Create the crown I want to cut on the vinyl cutter and cut it on heat press vinyl.
  5. Iron on/heat press it onto the proper pattern piece
  6. Create a pattern layout for the LED lights (what colors will I use? How will they turn on and off, where will the battery pack and controls go?)
  7. prep material for the light pattern.

  8. Sew any last pieces of the coat together and add finishing touches.

I plan on doing steps 1 & 2 in class tomorrow. I hope to come to ThingSpace Fri or Sat of this week and work on steps 3 – 5. I will have to do the sewing parts at home on my own machine.

*In the beginning, I wanted to do embroidery but the machine is very finicky so I will see if I decide to re-implement that component.

I will take pictures of each step and document them weekly on this blog.

I tested the vinyl cutter about two weeks ago and made these butterfly stickers.
